The University of Maiduguri has issued a firm directive banning unauthorized farming activities within its campus environment, citing concerns over environmental sanitation and aesthetics.
This decision follows resolutions reached at the university’s Top Management Committee (TMC) meeting held on Tuesday, May 20, 2025. The announcement was officially conveyed in a circular signed by Professor Buba M. Sastawa, Director of Landscape & Sanitation Management.
According to the memo, staff members may only cultivate crops within the immediate premises of their residences. Any farming activity conducted outside the designated areas will be considered a violation and such farmlands will be forcibly cleared.
In addition, only creeping or low-growing crops not exceeding 30cm in height are allowed within the university campus. Exceptions will only be granted for research-related farming projects.
The directive also mandates immediate post-harvest clearing of all cultivated areas, as part of efforts to maintain cleanliness and order on campus.
As part of enforcement measures, any staff found violating the guidelines will be fined Fifty Thousand Naira (₦50,000). The amount is to be deducted directly from their salaries by the University Bursary. Furthermore, offenders will be barred from participating in farming activities for the next crop year.
The University has called on staff and residents to cooperate in maintaining the institution’s environmental standards, stressing that cleanliness and landscape management are a shared responsibility.
The circular was copied to all relevant officers of the university including the Vice-Chancellor, Registrar, Bursar, Deans, Directors, the Chief Security Officer, and was posted on campus notice boards.
