The Federal Government of Nigeria has officially declared Tuesday, July 15, 2025, a public holiday in honour of former President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away earlier this week. This declaration comes as part of the ongoing seven-day national mourning period announced by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR.
The announcement was made by the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, following presidential approval. According to the Minister, the public holiday serves as a tribute to the late President’s lifelong service to the country and his significant role in Nigeria’s democratic development.
“President Muhammadu Buhari served Nigeria with dedication, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to the unity and progress of our great nation,” Dr. Tunji-Ojo said. “This public holiday provides an opportunity for all Nigerians to reflect on his life, leadership, and the values he upheld.”
Nigerians are encouraged to use the day to promote peace, unity, and patriotism—values that the late President consistently championed throughout his public life.
As previously announced, national flags across the country are to fly at half-mast from Sunday, July 13 to Saturday, July 19, in solemn observance of the mourning period.
The Federal Government also extended its condolences to the Buhari family, the people of Katsina State, and all Nigerians, praying for the peaceful repose of the late President’s soul.
Muhammadu Buhari, who served as Nigeria’s Head of State between 1983 and 1985 and later as a two-term civilian President from 2015 to 2023, is remembered for his commitment to anti-corruption, national security, and infrastructural development.
