In a significant move to honour the legacy of Nigeria’s late former President, Muhammadu Buhari, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has announced the renaming of the University of Maiduguri (UNIMAID) to Muhammadu Buhari University, Maiduguri.
The announcement was made on Thursday during an expanded Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting held at the Presidential Villa, Abuja. The session, convened in honour of the late leader, was attended by serving ministers, former cabinet members, dignitaries, and members of Buhari’s family, including his son, Yusuf Buhari.
President Tinubu, while paying tribute, described the late Buhari as a leader of “unshakable integrity, modest virtue, and quiet greatness.” He remarked,
“In honour of his memory, with this special session of the Federal Executive Council (expanded), can we adopt the naming of the University of Maiduguri with a new name — Muhammadu Buhari University, Maiduguri?”
The proposal was met with unanimous applause and affirmation from attendees.
The President further eulogized Buhari’s personal virtues, highlighting his private life as a source of strength and moral example.
“His life was a rebuke to vice and a refuge for virtue. The purity of his private character gave radiance to the discipline and integrity of his public service,” Tinubu said.
The renaming comes just days after Buhari’s death on Saturday, July 13, 2025, in London following a prolonged illness. He was buried in accordance with Islamic rites on Tuesday, in a ceremony that drew the attendance of both national and international dignitaries.
Muhammadu Buhari, a retired Major General, served as Nigeria’s military Head of State from 1983 to 1985 and later as a democratically elected president from 2015 to 2023, making him Nigeria’s second-longest-serving national leader.
The University of Maiduguri, now to be known as Muhammadu Buhari University, is one of the foremost federal institutions in the northeastern region, playing a key role in higher education development and research, particularly during the insurgency era in Borno State.
