LASU HOLDS 2025/2026 ORIENTATION PROGRAMME FOR NEWLY ADMITTED FULL-TIME AND DIRECT ENTRY UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS - DEESWIFT CONSULTS
The Students’ Affairs Division of Lagos State University (LASU) held a two-day Orientation Programme for newly admitted full-time and direct entry (200-level) students of the 2025/2026 academic session on Monday, 17th and Tuesday, 18th November 2025.
Held at the Buba Marwa Auditorium, LASU Main Campus, Ojo, Lagos, the programme provided new students with essential information and guidance for a successful transition into university life.
In her welcome address, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, mni, NPOM, congratulated the new students on securing admission out of over 70,000 applicants. She noted that the orientation was not merely ceremonial but thoughtfully designed to guide students towards success throughout their studies.
Professor Olatunji-Bello highlighted LASU’s ranking as the best state university in Nigeria and the best in West Africa, according to the 2023 University of Indonesia GreenMetric Global Ranking. She reassured students of the University’s commitment to sustaining a conducive and uninterrupted academic environment, maintained consistently over the past four academic sessions.
Addressing conduct and discipline, the Vice-Chancellor emphasised that LASU has zero-tolerance policy for antisocial behaviour, stating: “There is no room for cultism, examination malpractice, indecent dressing, extortion, aggressive behaviour of any kind, sexual harassment, assault or other negative vices. Any student found guilty of disrupting the normal academic activities of this university will face consequences in line with university guidelines.” She urged students to uphold high standards of character and learning throughout their stay in the University.
In his opening remarks, the Acting Dean, Students’ Affairs Division, Dr Abiodun Fatai-Abatan, advised students to take their academic journey seriously. He offered five key tips: prioritise studies and maintain a good CGPA from the outset; choose friends wisely and avoid harmful associations; master time management, as freedom without structure leads to chaos; spend pocket money responsibly; seek help whenever in doubt or trouble.
He reiterated the University’s dedication to providing quality welfare services, supporting students’ academic growth, and fostering an environment that promotes innovation and character development. He also urged students to access and read the Student Handbook available on the University website.
Day One commenced with several lectures delivered by key University officials. These included the representative of the University Bursar, Mr Emmanuel Sosu-Olaitan, who addressed “Financial Matters: Fees, Awards, and Scholarships,” while the representative of the University Librarian, Mr Wakeel Ogungbo, spoke on “Cultivating Good Reading Habits in the University.” Following this, the Deputy Registrar of the Admissions Office, Mr Kabiru Okugbesan, presented on “Navigating Through the Admission Process,” and the Director of Health Services, Dr Nasir O. Ariyibi, covered “Taking Charge of Your Personal Hygiene and Environmental Health.”
Furthermore, the Deputy Registrar and Head of the Counselling Unit, Dr Joseph Ayeni, delivered a lecture titled “A Guide Towards Planning Never to Fail and Peer Influence.” In addition, the representative of the Director, Directorate of ICT, Dr Rilwan Mustapha, spoke on “Navigating ICT Services in LASU: A Do-It-Yourself Approach,” and finally, motivational speaker Mr Olumide also provided encouragement to students, urging them to eliminate distractions and seek mentorship.
Day Two continued with several informative presentations by resource persons. These included the Acting Dean of the Students’ Affairs Division, Dr Abiodun Fatai-Abatan, who spoke on “University Guidelines on Students’ Conduct”; and the Acting Director of the Centre for Response and Prevention of Gender-Based Violence (CRPSGBV), Prof. Igot Ofem, who addressed *”Prevention of Gender-Based Violence in the University.”* Furthermore, the Director of the Directorate of Legal Affairs, Mrs Olajumoke Boyejo, enlightened the students on “Your Rights and Limitations in the University,” whilst the Deputy Registrar, Exams and Records, Mrs Abiodun Meruwoma, represented by Mr Julius Nunayon, lectured on “Types, Uses, and Management of Academic Records.”
Subsequently, the Director, Directorate of Sports and Recreation, Dr Segun Olawunmi, represented by the Deputy Director, Mr Idowu Owoyemi, covered “Sporting Activities and Facilities in the University,” while the Chief Security Coordinator, CSP Oluwole Ojo (Rtd.), enlightened the students on “Security Measures and Precautions against Violence/Cultism.”
Students actively participated in a question-and-answer session, where they received clarity on issues related to admission, course registration, and other academic concerns.
Games and quizzes added excitement to the programme, with cash prizes awarded by the Lagos State University Students’ Union (LASUSU) and the Acting Dean, Students’ Affairs Division, Dr Abiodun Fatai-Abatan.
Other members of the University Management present at the event included the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration), Prof. Toyin Enikuomehin; the Registrar, Mr Emmanuel A. Fanu; the representative of the Bursar, Mr Emmanuel Sosu-Olaitan; and the University Librarian, Dr Omawunmi Makinde.
The programme ended with a vote of thanks delivered by the Deputy Registrar, Students’ Affairs Division, Mr Abdulhameed Lawal.
The orientation programme reaffirmed LASU’s commitment to holistic student development, academic excellence, and sound character formation.
