Lagos Govt Approves New Allowances for University Staff, Urges ASUU to End Strike
The Lagos State Government has approved the implementation of new allowances and other agreements reached with staff unions in state-owned universities and tertiary institutions, while appealing to the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to suspend its ongoing strike.
The Lagos State Government has approved the domestication and implementation of agreements covering staff unions in Lagos State-owned universities and other tertiary institutions.
The approval, communicated in a letter dated October 7, 2026, includes new allowances for both academic and non-academic staff across the affected institutions.
The letter was signed by the Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Mr Tolani Sule, and addressed to the leadership of ASUU in Lagos State-owned universities.
New Allowances Approved for Academic Staff
Under the approved agreement, academic staff are to receive a 40 per cent Consolidated Academic Staff Allowance (CATA) and 10 per cent Earned Academic Allowance (EAA).
The government also approved monthly allowances of:
₦70,000 for Readers
₦145,000 for Professors
For non-academic staff, the government approved 35 per cent revised allowances in line with the agreements reached with the relevant unions.
Payments to Take Effect From January 2026
According to the government, the approved payments will be effective from January 1, 2026.
The arrears are expected to be paid in two tranches, alongside the October and November 2026 salaries, respectively.
The government also approved that all allowances covered by the agreements for the unions will be tax-free.
Relevant government agencies have been directed to commence immediate implementation of the approved arrangements in accordance with existing financial regulations.
Lagos Govt Appeals to ASUU to End Strike
Following the approval, the Lagos State Government appealed to the leadership of ASUU to direct its members to suspend the ongoing strike and resume work immediately.
The government expressed appreciation to the union for its patience, maturity and understanding throughout the negotiation process.
It also urged university staff to continue to maintain industrial peace and remain committed to their responsibilities.
What This Means for LASU Students
The development comes amid the ongoing industrial action affecting Lagos State-owned universities, including the Lagos State University (LASU).
While the government has appealed for an immediate suspension of the strike, students should note that the government's request does not, by itself, confirm that academic and administrative activities have already resumed.
Students are therefore advised to continue monitoring official announcements from LASU, ASUU and the Lagos State Government for confirmation of the next steps, including the actual date for resumption of academic and administrative activities.
