The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) has called off its two-week warning strike, directing its members to resume duties from Monday, December 16, 2024.
The strike, which began on December 2, 2024, was a desperate cry for the government to address the nine outstanding issues that have been plaguing the sector. These issues include the implementation of a new scheme of service, payment of owed salaries, and resolution of promotion disputes.
But after a conciliation meeting facilitated by the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment, ASUP has decided to suspend the strike. A new memorandum of understanding was signed during the meeting, with a review meeting scheduled for January 23, 2025, to assess compliance.
ASUP President, Shammah S. Kpanja, expressed his gratitude to the union’s members for their active participation in the strike. He also directed them to resume duties from Monday, pending the outcome of the review meeting.
Kpanja noted that the union’s National Executive Council will meet after the review meeting to assess the situation and take further decisions. He urged members to remain vigilant and committed to the union’s struggle for better working conditions and improved welfare.
With the suspension of the strike, polytechnic students across the country can now breathe a sigh of relief as academic activities are expected to return to normal. However, the outcome of the review meeting and the government’s response to ASUP’s demands will determine the next line of action for the union.
