Ambrose Alli University (AAU), Ekpoma, has launched an internal investigation into allegations of rape against one of its lecturers, Mr. Okoromi Abhasebhor, of the Department of Mathematics.
According to information available to campus security, the incident allegedly occurred on Monday, July 7, 2025, at the Faculty of Physical Sciences. The alleged victim, a 16-year-old food vendor, was said to have been sent by her aunt to deliver a food package to a lecturer within the faculty when she was allegedly assaulted in Mr. Abhasebhor’s office.
The girl, who is not a student of the university, reportedly informed her aunt immediately after the incident. She was subsequently taken to the Irrua Specialist Teaching Hospital for medical examination. According to a preliminary report referenced by university authorities, the medical findings indicated signs of forceful penetration.
An internal memo dated July 9, 2025, and signed by the Acting Registrar, Mr. Ephraim Ikharehon Isiraojie, confirmed that the university management received a security report regarding the alleged incident. The memo also noted that the accused allegedly attempted to offer the girl money in a bid to keep her silent, a gesture she reportedly rejected.
Mr. Abhasebhor has been officially requested to respond in writing within 48 hours, through his Head of Department and Faculty Dean, explaining why disciplinary action should not be taken against him over what was described as an act of gross misconduct.
The university’s internal security and administrative arms are currently reviewing the matter, and relevant offices including Legal Services, the Dean of Faculty, and the Acting Vice-Chancellor have been copied in the correspondence for appropriate action.
