The Governing Council of Bayero University, Kano (BUK) has approved the appointment of Professor Haruna Musa as the 12th substantive Vice Chancellor of the institution.
The appointment, which takes effect from August 18, 2025, is for a single tenure of five years.
This was contained in a letter signed by the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the University’s Governing Council, Dr. Nasiru Yusuf Gawuna, and made available to journalists by the Director, Public Affairs of BUK, Malam Lamara Garba.
“The Governing Council of Bayero University, Kano, in the exercise of the powers conferred on it by Section 4 of the Universities (Miscellaneous Provisions) Amendment Act, 2003, at its meeting held on Thursday, July 3, 2025, considered the submission from the Selection Board, and hereby approved your appointment as the substantive Vice Chancellor of Bayero University, Kano for a period of five (5) years with effect from August 18, 2025,” the letter read in part.
Dr. Gawuna congratulated Professor Musa on his appointment and expressed hope for a successful tenure.
Born on June 20, 1967, in Dambatta, Kano State, Prof. Musa attended Sabuwar Unguwa Primary School (1974–1980) and Government Secondary School Dambatta (1980–1985). He proceeded to the College of Arts, Science and Remedial Studies (CASRS), Kano, where he obtained his IJMBE certificate in 1988.
He holds a BSc (Hons) in Chemistry from Bayero University Kano (1991), an MSc in Polymer Chemistry from the same institution (1999), and a PhD in Chemistry from the University of Bristol, United Kingdom (2009). During his doctoral studies, he worked part-time as a chemist with Revolymer Ltd, a spin-off company of the University of Bristol.
Prof. Musa has made notable contributions to research, including serving as Principal Investigator for a National Research Fund project on Electrically Rechargeable Zinc Air Batteries for Rural Electrification, funded to the tune of ₦36 million (2020–2024). He was also involved in two Institution-Based Research (IBR) grants worth ₦1.7 million (2023) and ₦2 million (2019) respectively.
His appointment follows years of dedicated service to the university and the broader academic community.
