The Governor of Edo State, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has approved a ₦1 billion annual bursary scheme for students of Edo origin enrolled in tertiary institutions across the country.
The announcement follows a town hall meeting held recently with youths in the state, during which the governor responded to calls from student and youth leaders urging the introduction of financial support for Edo indigenes pursuing higher education.
According to a statement issued by the Chief Press Secretary, Fred Itua, on Sunday, July 6, the initiative is aimed at reducing the financial burden on students and their families. It is also part of the government’s broader plan to improve access to education and promote academic excellence among young people in Edo.
“Eligibility for the bursary will be strictly tied to proper verification through each applicant’s Local Government of Origin to ensure that only bona fide indigenes benefit from the scheme,” the statement noted.
Governor Okpebholo, who has been in office for just eight months, reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to empowering young people through education, noting that the scheme would become an annual programme.
