Lagos State University (LASU) has reacted to a widely circulated video showing an altercation involving a parent and a student, condemning the assault and clarifying that the incident did not take place within the University’s premises.
In a statement issued by the Deputy Registrar and Coordinator of the Centre for Information and Public Relations, Oluwayemisi A. Thomas-Onashile, the University explained that the incident involved students of the Lagos State University College of Medicine (LASUCOM), Ikeja.
According to the University, the incident occurred at a privately operated hostel located outside the University’s campus. The affected student subsequently reported the matter to the police, after which the appropriate law enforcement authorities took up the case.
LASU Management further disclosed that internal disciplinary proceedings have been commenced against the students allegedly involved in the incident. The University said the process is being handled in accordance with its established regulations and disciplinary procedures.
The institution strongly denounced the use of violence, stating that assault, intimidation and harassment in any form will not be tolerated, regardless of whether such conduct occurs within or outside the University environment.
LASU also reminded its students of the need to uphold good character alongside academic excellence, stressing that they are expected to remain worthy in character and learning, consistent with the core values and mission of the institution.
The University urged students to exercise caution in their daily activities, make responsible decisions and report any threat, concern or incident that could affect their safety to the appropriate authorities without delay.
Parents and guardians were equally encouraged to work constructively with the University, respect institutional procedures and boundaries, and play their part in ensuring that their wards demonstrate discipline, responsibility and integrity.
LASU reaffirmed its commitment to the safety, welfare and academic development of its students, assuring the University community that it will continue to promote a secure and conducive environment for learning.
