GOV. SANWO-OLU COMMISSIONS RENOVATED LASUCOM HOSTEL, BOOSTS CAPACITY TO 300 STUDENTS
The Governor gave the assurance on Wednesday, 2 September 2026, during the commissioning of the renovated 300-capacity hostel, describing the project as part of the Lagos State Government’s broader strategy to address the shortage of skilled human resources and expand the production of competent healthcare professionals.
Speaking through the Commissioner for Health, Professor Akin Abayomi, Governor Sanwo-Olu said the State Government remained committed to expanding the production of qualified health professionals while providing the infrastructure and enabling environment required to support medical education and healthcare delivery.
The renovation has increased the hostel’s capacity from 195 students as of September 2025 to 300 students, comprising 70 spaces on the ground floor and 74 spaces each on the first, second and third floors.
The upgraded facility also features 24/7 solar-powered lights, a 15,000-litre overhead water storage capacity with filtration, USB power sockets for occupants and bespoke wardrobe arrangements, alongside enhanced infrastructure and modernised living amenities.
Professor Abayomi stressed that the renovated hostel should be viewed beyond the provision of accommodation, describing it as part of a broader strategy by the Lagos State Government to invest in the future of medical education and healthcare.
He added that the project demonstrates the government’s commitment to students’ welfare and comfort, particularly as accreditation bodies and other stakeholders increasingly place emphasis on conducive learning and living environments for students.
In his opening remarks, the Provost of LASUCOM, Professor Idowu, said the renovated hostel would significantly transform the landscape of student accommodation at the College.
He expressed appreciation to Governor Sanwo-Olu for delivering the project within record time and commended the students for their patience throughout the renovation.
The project was implemented by the Lagos State Infrastructure Asset Management Agency (LASIAMA) in conjunction with Messrs. Meditrak Limited, which handled the rebranding and modernisation of the facility.
The new structure was designed to optimise available space, improve natural lighting and ventilation, enhance sustainability, and address structural and water-related defects.
Non-destructive testing and structural repairs were carried out following the discovery of defects during preliminary works before the project proceeded to civil works and finishing.
The Managing Director of Meditrak, Mr. Tayo Bright, said the structure was executed and optimised with emphasis on safety and sustainability, expressing confidence that the renovated facility would meet high standards.
The General Manager of LASIAMA, Ms. Adenkike Adekanbi, disclosed that the project underwent about four years of planning and assessment before its implementation.
She acknowledged the significant work and effort invested in transforming the facility into modern student accommodation that meets contemporary standards.
The Chief Medical Director of the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), Professor Adetokunbo O. Fabanwo, in his goodwill message, reaffirmed his belief in the importance of providing medical students with a comfortable and conducive environment for learning.
The renovated hostel represents a significant investment in student welfare and medical education while reinforcing the Lagos State Government’s broader commitment to strengthening medical education infrastructure and developing a sustainable pipeline of qualified health professionals.
