Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka, has expanded its postgraduate learning options with the introduction of online postgraduate education, providing students with greater flexibility in pursuing their academic programmes.
The new option is being implemented through the University's College of Postgraduate Studies, headed by Prof. Emmanuel Chukwudebere Obidimma.
Under the new arrangement, eligible postgraduate students can participate in lectures, access academic resources and take part in approved academic activities remotely.
The development means students who reside outside Awka — including those in other parts of Nigeria or abroad — can pursue their postgraduate studies without having to travel to the university regularly.
PHYSICAL AND ONLINE OPTIONS AVAILABLE
UNIZIK will continue to offer its conventional physical mode of study for postgraduate students who prefer attending academic activities on campus.
At the same time, the online option provides an alternative for eligible students whose location or other commitments may make regular physical attendance difficult.
According to the information provided by the university, eligible postgraduate students may also participate remotely in examinations and project, thesis or dissertation defences, subject to the University's established procedures and requirements.
PART OF UNIZIK'S DIGITAL TRANSFORMATION
The expansion of online postgraduate education forms part of UNIZIK's broader digital transformation efforts.
The University's Management Information and Communication Technology Unit (MICTU), under the leadership of Prof. Ikechukwu Onyenwe, has been involved in expanding digital services across various areas of university administration and academic operations.
The university's digital initiatives include:
Online transcript processing;
Tuition fee payment;
Certificate collection;
The UNIZIK Student Portal;
AI-enabled biometric capturing;
Proctored examinations; and
Digital clearance for graduating students.
The growing use of digital platforms is aimed at making academic and administrative services more accessible to students while reducing the need for physical processes where applicable.
MORE FLEXIBILITY FOR POSTGRADUATE STUDENTS
With both physical and online learning options available, postgraduate students can select the mode that best suits their circumstances, subject to programme and university requirements.
For students living in locations such as Lagos, Abuja or outside Nigeria, the online option could provide an opportunity to continue their postgraduate education at UNIZIK without the need for frequent travel to Awka.
The development reflects the university's ongoing efforts to expand digital access and provide more flexible pathways for postgraduate education.
